Hajal Boosts Into First In Vert Open Qualifier
Jun 13 2006 / Denver This may come as a shock to everyone, but it appears that Bob, Bucky and Andy have got some serious competition to contend with here at the Dew Tour in Denver. I know. I know. You all thought that the big three from Louisville's Panasonic Open would just waltz into Denver and wreak havoc on the skateboard vert world. Well, after viewing the vert open qualifier I think they've got they're work cut out for them, which should make for an exciting vert prelim later today. There was some confusion at the practice session prior to the vert open qualifier because while eight skaters signed up to compete, only six skaters showed. There was talk that the qualifier would be cancelled and all six would simply be passed on to the next round. As a result, there wasn't much of a practice session beforehand. But then, just minutes before the qualifier start time the rest showed up to throw down.
Phil Hajal, known for launching into space with his lofty airs, boosted into first place with a beautifully executed 540 and a huge method air. Mizael Simao took second showcasing some dexterous lip work including a long frontside nose grind and a solid, super smooth kickflip. And Paul Zitzer took third by working the ramp one side to the other launching floaty ollie airs, tail grabs and double grabs.

Glen Charnoski came in a solid 4th place looking smooth and rocking out inverts up the extension and a towering Madonna. Benji Galloway took 5th with his frontside tail grab over the channel. And Lat34's very own Derek Krasauskas brought up the rear in sixth place.

Not bad for a guy who originally wasn't planning on even entering the competition. That's what I love about the Dew Tour! You never know what's going to happen!
