FMX Prelims Bring Winds of Change

Jul 15 2006 / Denver

Twenty of the world’s finest FMX competitors brought their bag of tricks to the Right Guard Open here in Denver , each with the talent and ability to put their names at the top of the leader board on any given day. All 20 riders we allowed two, 90-second runs, with the top seven automatically making the cut.

Surprisingly, some of the biggest names here would nee

Drake Mcelroyd a second crack at the course. Nate Adams, Ailo Gaup, Mike Massion. For other titans like Ronnie Renner, a secon run would not help. The top 5 scorers from the second heat were added to 7 from the first. The top 7 are as follows:

Travis Pastrana

 Mathiew Rebeaud

Ronnie Faisst

Dustin Miller

Jeremy Lusk

Robbie Madison

Kenny Bartram

With thermometer peged at 112, the loose, dry fill in some areas of the course took down more than one rider and caused others to miss tricks or go smaller than they probably would have wanted. The wind was a big factor as well. When the first round started, the breeze was light and variable at 4-10 mph. Half way through, however, the gusts began to kick, and soon the Dew flags were snapping in a 20 mph Colorado crosswind. For Ronnie Renner and Ailo Gaup it proved to be too much. They aborted their first runs, giving Round One to the Wind Gods.

With the BMX venue deconstructed, the FMX’ers had slightly more room to work with today. Some took advantage of the extra run-in to throw some monster moves that wowed the 1000-plus crowd. Superman variations, kisses of death and lazyboys were all well represented; with saran-wrap, and seat-grab back flips bringing on the big cheers. The stunners came from riders like Ronnie Renner and Drake Mcelroy who’s nearly-inverted tail whips stopped hearts all across the viewing stands. Very cool!

With $75G’s and new Toyota Tacoma Truck on the line, you can bet that the top 12 riders will bring everything they have to the Right Guard Open FMX Finals. For those who didn’t make the leader board, Portland is less than a month away. And that may be all the time some of them need. As it stands now the top 12 competitors are as follos.
