BMX Vert has come so far that a stellar Simon Tabron run with a huge 900 in the mix is good enough for… third place.

Chad Kagy's lofty whip flair in the middle of a rock solid second run? Second place. Such is the state of BMX Vert, circa 2006, under the tyranny of Jamie Bestwick.

In what may have been his best run of all time, Bestwick came crashing through the gates in round one to post a score of 95.75. His run was so much faster, higher, and gnarlier than anything else seen on the ramp tonight that the only real question after round one was how the rest of the field would sort itself out.

Barring some unforeseen disaster between now and the Playstation Pro contest in Orlando next month, Bestwick will be the 2006 Dew Tour champ in BMX Vert: His overall total of 375 puts him out of reach of everybody but Kagy who, with 280 points, would need Bestwick to drop out altogether in order to catch up.

Tabron and Kagy actually ended up in a tie in tonight's contest, with Tabron's 900 in round one helping him post a 92.75 and Kagy posting the same in a round two redemption after falling in the first run. Dew Tour tie-breakers come down to a comparison of weaker run scores: Tabron cost himself 2nd place with a round two goof run including elusive moves like the jammin' salmon wiggle.

Kevin Robinson (Kevin Robinson's Blog)– desperately trying to steer clear of a San Jose curse that sent him to the hospital last year and knocked him down in both prelim runs and his first final run this year – pulled out a fourth place finish with his successful second run. In an encore celebration, he stomped a picture-perfect post-competition double flair for the crowd as they were leaving their seats. Robinson is now in distant third for the overall standings with 244 points.

Bestwick took a little victory lap of his own for his final run, and may get to take a few more in Orlando.
